Louisiana Court Bans Campaign Contributions by Casinos

Posted by wp 15 June, 2008

Previously, the law prohibited casinos from promotional donations. However, since 1996, it is allowed for the video poker industry to accept such handouts. The new law would ban casino proprietors, companies, administrators, casino gear firms and providers from contributions to political events. This new law overturns a verdict made last year reversing the same kind of law. It is stated that the verdict to ban campaign donations is against the first amendment to the Constitution which stated not to unreasonably limit society’s freedom. However, this new decision may be contradicted to the courts stance in 1994, which reversed an element of the l996 law that limited video poker benefits from dealing with promotional donations. The Supreme Court stated that there are disparities between the video poker industry and grand state accredited casinos.
